IDC CA Trainee Programme Offers 36-Month SAICA Training in Development Finance

Accounting graduates pursuing the Chartered Accountant pathway can apply for the Industrial Development Corporation’s 36-month CA Trainee Programme in Gauteng.

The programme allows successful candidates to complete their SAICA articles within IDC while gaining structured training and practical exposure to accounting, finance and the Corporation’s broader business operations.

Applications close on 6 September 2026.

What does the IDC CA Trainee Programme offer?

The programme provides a 36-month fixed-term SAICA training contract for prospective Chartered Accountants.

Trainees receive formal development and practical workplace experience aimed at building the professional competencies required in the CA profession.

Because the programme is based at IDC, candidates can also gain exposure to a development finance organisation involved in funding and supporting businesses and economic projects.

This creates a broader commercial context than accounting alone, with potential exposure to finance, investment activity and corporate decision-making.

Who can apply?

Applicants must have completed, or currently be enrolled in, a SAICA-accredited academic programme that allows entry into the SAICA Initial Assessment of Competence in January 2027.

Eligible qualifications include:

  • Certificate in Theory of Accounting
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting
  • Honours Degree in Accounting
  • An equivalent qualification that allows entry into the SAICA Initial Assessment of Competence

Candidates transferring from another training office must already have passed the SAICA Initial Assessment of Competence.

Who is not eligible?

Candidates currently completing CTA Level 1 or a BCTA Bridging Course to CTA are not eligible for this intake.

Applicants should check their academic pathway carefully before applying because eligibility is tied directly to the SAICA qualification process.

What experience can trainees gain?

IDC aims to develop future Chartered Accountants who can contribute to its core business areas.

The programme gives trainees practical workplace exposure while helping them build experience across accounting and professional business functions.

Participants can also benefit from:

  • Structured practical training
  • Exposure to IDC business operations
  • Professional networking
  • Experience working with internal and external stakeholders
  • Insight into different career paths within the Corporation
  • Development of professional judgement and leadership potential

The 36-month structure gives trainees time to build both technical knowledge and broader commercial experience.

Why is development finance relevant to CA trainees?

Development finance combines accounting and financial skills with investment and economic development.

Organisations such as IDC assess businesses, projects and funding opportunities, which means financial information plays an important role in decision-making.

For aspiring Chartered Accountants, experience in this type of organisation can build understanding of areas such as:

  • Financial analysis
  • Corporate finance
  • Investment assessment
  • Financial reporting
  • Governance
  • Risk
  • Business performance
  • Stakeholder management

These skills can support careers in accounting firms, banks, investment organisations, corporations and other professional services businesses.

Which technical skills matter?

Applicants should have strong knowledge of their accounting field and understand the Industrial Development Corporation and its work.

Digital office skills are also important.

Candidates should be comfortable using:

  • Microsoft Excel
  • Microsoft Word
  • Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Microsoft Outlook
  • Microsoft Teams

Excel is particularly relevant in accounting and finance because it is widely used for financial analysis, reporting, reconciliations and data management.

Which professional skills are important?

IDC is looking for candidates who can work effectively with people while maintaining professional standards.

Important skills include:

  • Written and verbal communication
  • Relationship building
  • Time management
  • Attention to detail
  • Professional judgement
  • Stakeholder engagement
  • Confidentiality
  • Planning and organisation

Candidates should also be able to work under pressure, follow professional procedures and remain willing to learn.

What career paths can the programme support?

Completing SAICA articles can open several career routes beyond traditional accounting.

Depending on experience and future qualifications, trainees may eventually move into areas such as:

  • Chartered Accountancy
  • Corporate finance
  • Investment analysis
  • Financial management
  • Audit
  • Risk management
  • Governance and compliance
  • Financial reporting
  • Development finance
  • Business leadership

The combination of SAICA training and exposure to IDC’s financial activities can be particularly useful for candidates interested in the broader finance and investment sector.

How does Employment Equity apply?

IDC is committed to equality, diversity and Employment Equity.

Preference may be given to suitably qualified candidates from underrepresented designated groups in line with IDC’s Employment Equity Plan and organisational targets.
