A Two-Year Internship Inside South Africa’s Precious Metals Regulator

Graduate opportunities in South Africa’s public sector are often limited, particularly in specialist areas such as internal auditing and regulatory oversight. For unemployed graduates looking to enter this space, the South African Diamond and Precious Metals Regulator is offering a structured internship that places governance, compliance, and risk management at the centre of day-to-day work.

South African Diamond and Precious Metals Regulator has confirmed that applications are open for its Internship Programme 2026, a 24-month graduate placement based in Doornfontein, Johannesburg.

A Two-Year Placement Focused on Audit and Oversight

Unlike short-term graduate placements, the SADPMR internship runs over two years, giving participants extended exposure to internal audit operations within a national regulator. The programme is housed within the Internal Audit division and is designed to prepare graduates for professional roles in auditing, governance, and public-sector accountability.

Interns will work alongside experienced audit and governance professionals, gaining practical exposure to internal audit methodologies, risk assessments, compliance frameworks, and regulatory processes. According to the regulator, the structure mirrors real audit environments rather than observational training.

What Interns Will Be Exposed To

The programme places interns directly within core audit activities. This includes supporting the annual audit plan, assisting with risk assessments, participating in audit fieldwork, and preparing working papers and audit documentation. Interns will also be involved in drafting audit findings, tracking corrective actions, and maintaining audit records.

The regulator says this exposure is intended to build technical competence, professional discipline, and an understanding of governance standards that apply within South Africa’s public sector.

Who the Programme Is Aimed At

The internship is open to South African citizens between the ages of 18 and 35 who are currently unemployed. Applicants must have completed a National Diploma, BCom, or Degree at NQF Level 6 or higher in fields such as Internal Auditing, Auditing, Accounting, Risk Management, or a closely related qualification.

In addition to academic requirements, SADPMR is looking for candidates with strong analytical skills, attention to detail, good communication ability, and an interest in ethics, integrity, and governance. Computer literacy and the ability to work both independently and within a team are listed as essential.

Location, Duration, and Support

The internship is based in Doornfontein, Johannesburg, and includes a monthly stipend for the full duration of the 24-month programme. SADPMR has noted that while the programme provides strong career preparation, completion does not guarantee permanent employment with the regulator.

Application Process and Deadline

Applications must be submitted by 20 February 2026. Candidates are required to submit a comprehensive CV, an application letter quoting Reference Number: JHB 01, certified copies of qualifications, and a certified copy of a South African ID. Applications can be emailed directly to jobs@sadpmr.co.za. Official advert can be viewed here.

The regulator has confirmed that late or incomplete applications will not be considered, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
