Netcare Medicross Receptionist: Healthcare Administration and Medical Billing Work in Pinetown

Netcare has a full-time Receptionist opportunity at Pinetown Medicross, with responsibilities across patient admissions, medical billing, appointment scheduling, switchboard services and financial processing. Applications close on 12 October 2026.

The position is suited to candidates with Matric or an equivalent NQF Level 4 qualification, a Higher Certificate at NQF Level 5, and at least one to two years of receptionist experience in a hospital or clinic environment.

What will you do as a Medicross Receptionist?

You will often be the first point of contact for patients and visitors entering the clinic.

Your work will cover the complete admissions process as well as customer service, administration, switchboard duties, billing and pay point responsibilities.

This makes the position broader than a conventional front-desk role because you will support both the patient experience and the clinic’s administrative and financial processes.

How will you manage the reception area?

You will help prepare the reception area for each working day and make sure the front desk is organised and welcoming.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining a neat reception area
  • Providing professional customer service
  • Completing documents accurately
  • Checking patient and billing information
  • Handling complaints
  • Answering telephone calls
  • Recording and delivering messages
  • Transferring calls to the correct staff member
  • Scheduling patient bookings

You will also need to make sure bookings reflect the patient’s preferred practitioner, date and time where possible.

What will you do during patient admissions?

You will manage patient arrivals and help patients complete the documentation needed for admission.

You will need to verify patient files, update information where necessary and capture medical and personal information accurately on the clinic system.

You will also direct patients to the correct healthcare professional or service and help manage patient flow through the clinic.

Will you schedule appointments?

Yes. You will be responsible for booking appointments and may also arrange specialist appointments requested by practitioners.

The role also includes managing requests for repeat scripts and helping to keep patient waiting times under control by keeping patients informed.

How does medical billing fit into the role?

Billing is a significant part of the position.

You will need to make sure patients are billed correctly after their visits and that the appropriate information is captured before accounts are submitted.

Your work can include:

  • Collecting cash, credit card and debit card payments
  • Allocating payments to patient accounts
  • Collecting outstanding patient amounts
  • Processing medical claim records
  • Checking billing information
  • Capturing ICD-10 codes
  • Selecting the correct stock items when billing
  • Submitting accounts through the relevant system
  • Providing patients with account statements

You will also take responsibility for banking and cash-up processes according to standard operating procedures.

What are ICD-10 codes?

ICD-10 codes are used in healthcare billing to classify medical diagnoses and conditions.

In this role, you will need to make sure the correct codes are captured as part of the billing process.

Accurate coding is important because it supports correct account processing and medical scheme claims.

Will you work with medical schemes?

Yes.

Knowledge of medical schemes is required for the position.

You may need to verify patient information, process transactions through the applicable switch application and inform patients when verification is unsuccessful or when amounts remain payable.

This gives the role a strong healthcare finance and medical administration component.

What systems and computer skills are required?

You need intermediate computer skills in:

  • Microsoft Word
  • Outlook
  • Excel

Knowledge of SAP and ME+ is also listed as required.

These systems support the administrative, billing and patient-management work handled at reception.

How important is patient confidentiality?

Patient confidentiality is essential.

You will work with personal, medical and financial information, so you must protect patient information and comply with POPIA requirements.

Accuracy is equally important because the information you capture affects patient records, billing and communication with healthcare stakeholders.

What happens if a patient has an emergency?

Reception staff also have a role in directing emergency cases appropriately.

If a patient needs urgent attention, you will need to refer them to the nursing station immediately and assist with getting them there if required.

You must make sure the patient is handed over to a nurse or practitioner before completing the necessary administrative follow-up.

What qualifications do you need?

You need:

  • Matric or equivalent NQF Level 4 qualification
  • Higher Certificate at NQF Level 5

You also need at least one to two years of previous receptionist experience in a hospital or clinic environment.

What knowledge will help you in the role?

Netcare requires:

  • Intermediate Microsoft Word skills
  • Intermediate Outlook skills
  • Intermediate Excel skills
  • Knowledge of medical schemes
  • SAP knowledge
  • ME+ knowledge

The position is best suited to someone comfortable working with both patients and healthcare administration systems.

What personal qualities will help you succeed?
