Netcare Paramedic Rescue Officer Opportunity at Milpark Hospital

Qualified paramedics can apply for a Paramedic Rescue Officer position with Netcare 911 at Netcare Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg.

The work centres on advanced life support, emergency response, patient transport, rescue operations and the safe use of ambulance equipment. It also includes clinical documentation, stock control, vehicle checks and regular professional training.

Applications close on 15 September 2026.

What does the Paramedic Rescue Officer do?

The Paramedic Rescue Officer responds to medical and trauma emergencies and provides advanced life support within the scope of HPCSA protocols.

The work begins before the ambulance leaves the station. Paramedics need to make sure the vehicle, medication and emergency equipment are ready for use before every shift.

During an emergency, they assess the scene, treat the patient, provide the required advanced care and transport the patient safely to the appropriate hospital.

Netcare 911 operates emergency medical and rescue services across South Africa, including advanced road and air ambulance services.

What qualifications do you need?

Applicants must be currently registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa Professional Board for Emergency Care as a paramedic.

Accepted professional routes include:

  • Critical Care Assistant
  • National Diploma in Emergency Medical Care
  • Diploma in Emergency Medical Care

Applicants must also be current with HPCSA Clinical Practice Guideline updates.

Additional qualifications in ACLS, PALS and ATLS are beneficial.

A qualification or education in business management can also strengthen an application.

How much experience is preferred?

Around four years of post-graduate patient-care experience in an operational setting is preferred.

This means Netcare is looking for someone who already understands the pressure and responsibility of front-line emergency medical work.

Computer skills, including Microsoft Office, are also useful because clinical and operational records form part of the job.

What kind of patient care is involved?

The position involves both emergency and non-emergency medical calls.

Paramedics are expected to respond quickly, provide care within their professional scope and keep patients and families informed during treatment.

Important responsibilities include:

  • Assessing and treating patients
  • Providing Advanced Life Support
  • Handling trauma and medical emergencies
  • Transporting patients safely
  • Handing patients over to hospital teams
  • Recording treatment accurately
  • Protecting patient confidentiality
  • Keeping family members informed where appropriate

Netcare’s emergency services use purpose-built intensive care ambulances to transport seriously ill patients between facilities when higher levels of care are needed.

Why does Milpark matter?

Netcare Milpark Hospital is one of Netcare’s Level 1 accredited private trauma centres.

Level 1 trauma centres are equipped to manage highly complex trauma cases and provide access to specialist emergency and surgical care.

For a paramedic, this means working within a healthcare system where emergency response, pre-hospital care and advanced trauma treatment are closely connected.

What equipment responsibilities come with the position?

Paramedics are responsible for making sure their ambulance and emergency equipment are safe and ready before each shift.

This includes checking:

  • Medical equipment
  • Rechargeable devices and batteries
  • Emergency stock
  • Drug registers
  • Vehicle condition
  • Equipment checklists

Any missing, damaged or faulty equipment must be reported.

Emergency equipment also needs to be cleaned, stored correctly and maintained according to the manufacturer’s requirements.

How important is clinical record keeping?

Accurate records are essential.

Paramedics must complete electronic patient report forms for every patient treated and maintain the records required by hospitals, Netcare 911 and healthcare regulations.

They also need to keep accurate medication records and make sure drug registers are updated when medicines are administered.

Good documentation helps protect patient safety and provides a clear record of the care that was delivered.

What safety responsibilities are involved?

Scene safety is a major part of emergency medical work.

Before treating a patient, the paramedic must decide whether the area is safe to enter and take the appropriate action when hazards are present.

Other safety responsibilities include:

  • Wearing the correct protective equipment
  • Driving emergency vehicles safely
  • Reporting injuries sustained on duty
  • Following occupational health and safety requirements
  • Keeping emergency equipment in safe working condition
  • Reporting unusual incidents

The work therefore combines clinical care with risk management and operational safety.

What does quality assurance mean in emergency care?

Quality assurance means making sure patient care, records, equipment and operating standards remain consistent.

The Paramedic Rescue Officer must follow HPCSA treatment protocols and keep up with changes to clinical guidelines. Continuing Medical Education and CPD activities are also part of maintaining professional competence.

Netcare operates its own Faculty of Emergency and Critical Care, which provides training and professional education for emergency medical practitioners.

What other skills matter?

Strong paramedics need more than clinical knowledge.

They also need to communicate clearly with patients, families, hospital staff and emergency teams.

Important qualities include:

  • Calm decision-making
  • Compassion
  • Professional communication
  • Attention to detail
  • Time management
  • Teamwork
  • Accountability
  • Ability to work under pressure

Emergency care often involves patients and families at difficult moments, so empathy and professionalism are important throughout the response.
