SMU Apprenticeships and Internships 2026: 38 Opportunities

Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University is offering 38 apprenticeship, internship and Work Integrated Learning opportunities across engineering, construction, artisan trades, environmental management and campus infrastructure.

Successful applicants will join SMU’s Built Environment Department on 24-month contracts, gaining practical experience while supporting projects, maintenance work and infrastructure development across the university.

Applications close on 18 September 2026 at 16:00.

The programme covers 14 technical and professional fields, giving both university and technical-college graduates several routes into built-environment work.

What will you do during the programme?

You will gain practical workplace experience inside SMU’s Built Environment Department.

Depending on your field, you may support infrastructure projects, attend technical meetings, participate in workshops and training, assist with project coordination and contribute to departmental initiatives.

The exact work will differ by placement, but the programme is designed to move you beyond academic theory and into the practical side of engineering, construction, maintenance and facilities management.

What will Construction Management interns work on?

There are three Construction Management positions for applicants with a Diploma, BEng or higher qualification in Construction Science, Construction Management or Building Sciences.

If selected, you can expect exposure to the coordination side of construction and infrastructure projects.

You may work around project schedules, contractors, building activities and the planning needed to keep construction work moving.

What will you learn in Architecture?

SMU has three Architecture positions for applicants with a Diploma, BEng or higher qualification in Architectural Studies.

You can expect practical exposure to the way architectural work connects with real buildings, infrastructure planning and project teams.

How will Quantity Surveying fit into the programme?

There are two Quantity Surveying positions for graduates in Construction Economics, Quantity Surveying or Building Sciences.

Electrical Engineering has the largest intake, with five positions.

Applicants may qualify with Electrical Engineering N6, a Diploma, BEng or a higher relevant qualification.

There are four Mechanical Engineering / HVAC positions.

You can qualify with Mechanical Engineering N6, a Diploma, BEng or a higher relevant qualification.

You may work around mechanical building systems such as ventilation, cooling and other equipment needed to support university facilities.

For graduates interested in facilities engineering, HVAC or building services, this can provide valuable practical exposure.

For these opportunities, you need an N6, National Diploma or higher relevant qualification. A trade certificate will be an advantage.

What will you do in Health and Safety?

There are two Health and Safety positions.

You need a qualification in Occupational Health and Safety, NEBOSH Level 6 or another relevant field.

This experience can support future work in construction safety, facilities compliance and occupational health and safety.

Who can apply?

You must be a South African citizen entering the workplace programme for the first time.
