  • Assisting with stock counts
  • Cleaning the deli and surrounding retail areas

The work combines food handling with the daily operational side of retail.

How will you work with customers?

You will provide customers with friendly and efficient service while helping them choose products and answering basic product questions.

Accurate order processing will also form part of the job.

Because you will work directly with customers, communication and product knowledge will be important.

Good service can influence whether customers return to the store, so the role contributes directly to the performance of the retail operation.

You will work with fresh, frozen and value-added poultry products.

Depending on the product, you may need to:

  • Portion it
  • Weigh it
  • Package it
  • Label it
  • Prepare it for display

Products must be handled according to approved standards so that presentation, quality and food safety are maintained.

How important is food safety?

Food safety is one of the most important parts of the position.

You will need to follow hygiene and HACCP requirements across food preparation, storage and display areas.

That includes monitoring:

  • Product temperatures
  • Freshness
  • Expiry dates
  • Storage conditions
  • Traceability information
  • Cleaning standards

If you identify a food-quality or safety problem, you will need to report it promptly.

What is HACCP?

HACCP is a food-safety system used to identify and control potential hazards during food handling and production.

In a deli environment, that means paying close attention to areas such as temperature control, hygiene, contamination risks and correct handling procedures.

Previous food-safety or HACCP training will therefore be an advantage.

How will stock rotation work?

You will help receive, replenish and rotate products using first-in, first-out principles.

This means older stock should generally be used or sold before newer stock.

Good stock rotation helps reduce:

  • Expired products
  • Food waste
  • Damaged stock
  • Shrinkage
  • Unnecessary losses

You will also assist with stock counts and help keep inventory records accurate.

Will you work with stock technology?

Experience with retail technology will be useful.

Goldi considers experience with tools such as:

  • Hand-held stock scanners
  • Label printers
  • Product traceability systems

an advantage.

You should also have basic computer literacy and be able to complete manual records accurately.

What qualifications and experience do you need?

You need:

  • Grade 12 or an equivalent qualification
  • One to two years of relevant experience in retail, a supermarket, deli or FMCG environment

Food-handling and customer-service experience will be advantageous.

Training in areas such as food safety, HACCP, retail, merchandising, customer service or first aid can also strengthen your application.

Useful skills include:

  • Teamwork
  • Time management
  • Customer service
  • Attention to detail

The role may also require you to:

  • Lift products
  • Move stock
  • Work in chilled areas
  • Work in frozen retail environments
  • Complete cleaning duties

You must also be willing to work weekends and public holidays when required.

How does merchandising fit into the role?

You will help keep product displays attractive, well stocked and correctly labelled.

Merchandising is important because customers need to find products easily and see them presented in a clean and appealing way.

Accurate pricing and labelling also help prevent customer-service problems and support efficient store operations.
