Siemens Engineering and Technology Bursary 2027 Opens for Matriculants

South African students planning to study engineering, technology or computer science can apply for the Siemens Engineering and Technology Bursary Programme for 2027.

The bursary is aimed at academically strong young people who want to study in fields that are important to South Africa’s engineering, digital technology and industrial sectors.

Funding is available for qualifications in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, Computer Science and Information Technology.

Matric applicants must meet minimum requirements in English, Pure Mathematics and Physical Science. Applicants must also be South African citizens between the ages of 18 and 25, be unemployed and must not already be receiving another bursary or NSFAS funding.

What is the Siemens Engineering and Technology Bursary 2027?

The Siemens bursary provides financial support for students who want to pursue higher education in engineering and technology-related fields.

Siemens operates across areas such as electrification, automation and digitalisation. The bursary programme therefore focuses on qualifications that can support careers in modern engineering, industrial technology, software, digital infrastructure and related technical industries.

For Matric learners who perform strongly in Mathematics and Physical Science, the programme provides an opportunity to obtain funding for university studies in fields with strong links to engineering and technology careers.

The bursary is available to students who are preparing to enter higher education as well as qualifying university students who are already studying in eligible fields.

What can you study with the Siemens bursary?

The Engineering and Technology Stream supports several scarce-skills qualifications.

Eligible study areas include:

  • BSc or BEng Electrical Engineering, including Heavy and Light Current
  • BSc or BEng Electronic Engineering
  • Bachelor of Engineering Technology
  • BEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering specialising in Mechatronics
  • Bachelor-level Computer Science
  • Information Technology

These qualifications can lead to careers across industries such as energy, automation, manufacturing, software development, telecommunications, infrastructure and digital systems.

Students should make sure their intended qualification falls within the approved engineering or technology fields before applying.

Who can apply as a Matric learner?

The Matric stream is aimed at young South Africans who meet both academic and personal requirements.

Applicants must:

  • Be South African citizens
  • Be between 18 and 25 years old
  • Be unemployed
  • Have completed Matric or currently be completing Grade 12
  • Achieve at least Level 5 in English
  • Achieve at least Level 5 in Pure Mathematics
  • Achieve at least Level 5 in Physical Science
  • Not receive another bursary
  • Not receive NSFAS funding

Pure Mathematics is specifically required. Mathematical Literacy does not meet the stated Mathematics requirement for this bursary.

Strong results in Mathematics and Physical Science are particularly important because the supported qualifications involve demanding technical and quantitative coursework.

Can current university students apply?

Yes. The Siemens bursary also includes requirements for students who are already studying or have been accepted to begin an eligible university programme.

University applicants need a minimum academic average of 65% in the year in which they apply.

They must also:

  • Study or be accepted to study full-time in an eligible field
  • Attend a locally recognised institution
  • Meet the institution’s registration requirements
  • Provide proof of acceptance before the bursary can be awarded
  • Not receive another bursary or NSFAS funding

Students who are already at tertiary level will need to provide their full academic record as part of the application.

What documents do Matric applicants need?

Applicants should prepare all supporting documents before submitting their application.

Matric applicants may need:

  • Motivation letter
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • South African ID document
  • Matric certificate
  • Grade 11 results
  • Grade 12 trial results
  • University acceptance letter

Students who are already attending university should provide a full tertiary academic record.

Applications without the required documents may be rejected automatically, so candidates should make sure every required document is uploaded correctly.

Why is this bursary relevant to engineering and technology careers?

Engineering and technology careers increasingly overlap with digital systems, automation, software and advanced industrial infrastructure.

Electrical engineers may work with power systems, industrial equipment and energy infrastructure. Electronic engineers can work with control systems, communications and embedded technologies. Mechatronics combines mechanical, electrical and software engineering.

Computer Science and Information Technology students can move into areas such as:

  • Software development
  • Cloud computing
  • Cybersecurity
  • Artificial intelligence
  • Data systems
  • Industrial automation
  • Business technology
  • Digital infrastructure

Siemens operates within many of these technology-driven areas, making the bursary particularly relevant to students who want careers connected to engineering and digital transformation.

What academic performance is expected?

Matric applicants need at least Level 5 in English, Pure Mathematics and Physical Science. For university-level applicants, a minimum academic average of 65% is required.

Meeting the minimum academic requirement does not automatically guarantee funding. The bursary selection process considers qualifying applicants and identifies candidates who best meet the programme criteria.

Students should therefore submit a strong motivation letter that explains their interest in engineering or technology and why they want to pursue their chosen qualification.

What happens after you apply?

  • Applicants who meet the academic requirements may be contacted by a Siemens recruiter or bursary coordinator.
  • Shortlisted candidates can be invited to complete a virtual video interview.
  • Successful candidates who complete the selection process will be awarded bursary support for the relevant year of study.
  • Applicants should make sure the contact information supplied in their application is correct so that Siemens can reach them if they progress to the next stage.

Can students with disabilities apply?

Yes. Siemens encourages applications from people with disabilities.

The company’s employment equity objectives may also be considered during the selection process. Applicants should still meet the academic and eligibility requirements for the bursary.

Can you receive NSFAS and the Siemens bursary at the same time?

No. Applicants must not already be receiving funding from another bursary programme or from NSFAS.

Students who are considering different funding options should therefore take this condition into account when deciding which programmes to pursue.

The Siemens bursary is intended to provide higher education funding to qualifying students within the approved engineering and technology fields.

How do you apply?

Applications must be completed online through the Siemens careers system.
